The Woodlands ranked as the second-smartest Texas region with a population between 50,000 and 99,999, according to a census-data driven formula developed by The Business Journals’ On Numbers, a division of American City Business Journals.

The analysis of brainpower in a community was based on 2009 U.S. Census Data for the percentages of a community that dropped out before high school, stopped their education at a high school diploma, stopped their education at an associate degree, stopped their education at a bachelor’s degree or earned a graduate degree.

Of the 483 areas with populations between 50,000 and 99,000 across the U.S. that were ranked, The Woodlands earned the No. 41 spot. The majority of the north Houston community, 37 percent, earned bachelor’s degrees. Another 19 percent of the population earned graduate degrees.

The only other Texas area that beat The Woodlands in terms of brainpower was College Station, which ranked No. 31 in the nation.

Other Houston areas that ranked in the top 100 were: Sugar Land at No. 63, Pearland at No. 95 and League City at No. 99
