Houston, along with Austin and McAllen-Edinburg, are the only three major U.S. metropolitan markets to gain retail trade jobs since the recession officially began in 2007.

Houston increased its retail trade jobs the most out of all the markets in the U.S. by adding 4,500 jobs between September 2007 and September 2011, according to an analysis of the latest U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics data by The Business Journals’ On Numbers, a division of American City Business Journals.

While Texas fared the best in terms of retail jobs, California fared the worst. Los Angeles lost more than 55,000 retail jobs, and Bakersfield, Calif. lost 16 percent of its retail jobs since 2007.
Houston has also added the largest number of jobs in the U.S. since the recession.
