Community colleges boosting Houston-area economy

One quarter of Texas’ community-college students are now in the Houston area and Gulf Coast community colleges contribute more than $507 million to the economy.
According to a recent report from the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board, Houston’s community colleges are significantly adding to the local economy, with the colleges contributing an additional $7.4 billion through former students’ earnings and increased business output.
More students are enrolling in science, technology, engineering and math classes. The Gulf Coast’s colleges saw a 9 percent enrollment increase in 2010 from the previous year.

The state has more than 735,000 community college students, the report said.
